Nigüelas

At 930m Nigüelas is the highest village in the valley. It is situated on the opposite side of the valley to the others and is closer to the Sierra Nevada. There are bars, several supermarkets and a bakery, all of which can be found near the church.

The Mudejar style church of San Juan Bautista dates back to the sixteenth century is well worth a visit, and in early May is used to host a renowned choral meeting.

Near the church is an agricultural museum housed in a fifteenth century olive oil mill.

It is easy to walk from the river Torrente up into the high Sierras. You can also take the well established route to the Alpujarran town of Lanjaron, this takes about 3 hours.

Nigüelas celebrates the fiesta of La Virgen de las Agustias on the third weekend of September with a week of events leading up to the fiesta.
